De Sumatra à Pile de Pâques, un ensemble d'îles, dont l'une a la dimension d'un continent, forme l'Océanie, qui occupe un tiers de la superficie de la terre. Son histoire commence voici 70 000 ans, quand des populations venues d'Asie traversent des étendues marines pour poursuivre leur route vers l'est. Ceux qui migrent tôt dans ce qui deviendra l'Australie et la Nouvelle-Guinée restent terriens. Les autres deviennent définitivement des hommes et des femmes de la mer avec l'arrivée des Austronésiens. Au gré des variations climatiques et de leurs connaissances techniques, ils peuplent les îles, jusqu'à atteindre les rivages de l'Amérique avec leurs pirogues. L'Océanie est un espace ouvert et très vite mondialisé dans sa partie occidentale ; les échanges s'avèrent souvent vitaux pour les insulaires. Cette histoire est plurielle. Elle inclut le destin de thalassocraties comme Srivijaya, Majapahit ou Tonga, de principautés structurées, des Moluques aux Hawaï, ou encore de simples chefferies héréditaires ou gouvernées par des "big men", en Mélanésie et chez les Papous. Les organisations sociales qui en résultent évoluent au gré des contacts avec les Indiens, les Chinois et les Malais en Insulinde, ou des migrations, notamment des Polynésiens en Mélanésie. Les populations évoluant en vase clos sont rares : elles le deviennent à la suite d'un événement climatique, comme en Nouvelle-Zélande ou sur Pile de Pâques, isolées à partir du XVe siècle à la suite de modifications des vents et des courants. Les Aborigènes sont une exception : un monde à part, sans contact avec l'extérieur, si ce n'est à quelques rares occasions sur les côtes nord du continent. L'arrivée brutale des Européens, à la fin du XVIII et au début du XIXe siècle, terme de cet ouvrage, bouleverse ces sociétés : elle provoque des désastres démographiques, des transformations économiques, politiques et culturelles de grande ampleur, parfois jusqu'à l'effondrement. Pour écrire l'histoire de ces espaces en mouvement constant, dont les traces sont ténues et les sources écrites rares, Dominique Barbe mobilise d'abondantes recherches ethnologiques et anthropologiques. Il emprunte les pistes ouvertes par l'étude du génome humain, l'histoire du climat et de l'environnement. Les avancées récentes de l'archéologie, avec ses techniques novatrices, apportent des connaissances et des éclairages nouveaux. Enrichi d'une quarantaine de cartes originales, illustré de prés de deux cents documents, ce livre, sans équivalent, retrace l'histoire de ces hommes et de ces femmes qui eurent la volonté de rester toujours et partout en relation avec la mer.
