During the modern period, the status of relics in urban spaces underwent a profound transformation, in line with the crises and criticisms that affected them. Relics went from being a sacred treasure that served the community to an emblem of a political-religious cause. Jusqu'au début du XVIIIe siècle, les reliques sont l'objet d'importants échanges, dynamisant la densité sacrale des espaces urbains. Puis, peu à peu, la banalisation matérielle, les critiques des érudits et philosophes transforment l'appréhension des corps saints. D'objets patrimonialisés garants d'une protection divine sur la cité, ils deviennent les emblèmes d'une communauté de croyants de plus en plus réduite. Les reliques traduisent ainsi l'évolution des sociétés urbaines à l'époque moderne : de la communauté à la société. About the Author Nicolas Guyard est professeur agrégé d'histoire, docteur en Histoire moderne. Il a soutenu une thèse intitulée « Reliques et espaces urbains des Réformes à la Restauration », sous la direction de Philippe Martin (université Lyon 2). Ses recherches actuelles portent sur la place et le rôle du sacré dans les sociétés modernes.Philippe Martin est professeur d'histoire moderne à l'université Lumière - Lyon 2. Spécialiste des processions, du livre de piété, de la liturgie, il a publié une Petite anthologie du « bien mourir » (Paris, 2012).Jean-Claude Zancarini est professeur émérite en études italiennes à l'École normale supérieure de Lyon. Auteur d'une thèse sur l'auteur-acteur vénitien Andrea Calmo (ca 1510-1571), il s'est attaché à la littérature théâtrale du XVIe siècle, avant de se consacrer aux liens entre histoire, langue et politique, et en particulier à la pensée politique florentine à l'époque des guerres d'Italie.
