Les trois premiers tomes de cet ouvrage ont exploré la signalisation et les automatismes des chemins de fer grandes lignes et des transports urbains (métros et tramways). Ce cinquième tome complète le tome 4 en décrivant les nouveautés intervenues depuis 2013, notamment, les projets inclus dans le programme Shift2rail/Europe's Rail de la Commission Européenne, et complète certains sujets parfois connexes à la signalisation, mais devenus indispensables aujourd'hui. Les sujets abordés sont par exemple : la cybersécurité, les capteurs (détection de rail cassé, contrôle d'intégrité du train...), les évolutions des concepts de maintenance, les nouveaux dispositifs de localisation des trains (satellites, centrales inertielles...), les nouveaux moyens d'exploitation des lignes régionales (projet NexTRegio en France notamment). Un chapitre concerne également les évolutions techniques de ces dernières années ou en cours de développement tels que le Poste Hybride à Procédé Informatique (PHPI) pour la RATP ou le Poste d'Aiguillage Informatique (PAI) de nouvelle génération ARGOS pour la SNCF. L'ensemble de ces cinq tomes constituera un ouvrage de référence pour les étudiants, les professionnels et les passionnés des transports.
