Cet ouvrage, qui rassemblera pour la toute première fois le travail artistique de Masahisa Fukase dans son ensemble, paraîtra aux Éditions Xavier Barral, en septembre 2018, à l'occasion d'une grande rétrospective qui aura lieu au Fotographiemuseum d'Amsterdam (FOAM), un an après celle des Rencontres d'Arles, qui s'est tenu l'été 2017. Connu pour The Solitude of Ravens, où des corbeaux menaçants en nuée ou solitaires noircissent des pages d'un bout à l'autre de ce livre mythique paru en 1986, le photographe japonais Masahisa Fukase, parmi les plus radicaux et les plus originaux de sa génération, possède en réalité une oeuvre protéiforme : recherches formelles, surimpressions, collages, autoportraits, photographies retravaillées au dessin, tirages noir & blanc, polaroids... Ses deux commissaires, Simon Baker, directeur du département photographique de la Tate Modern, à Londres, et Tomo Kosuga, directeur des archives Masahisa Fukase, à Tokyo, seront les auteurs de ce livre-somme qui présentera 26 séries de l'oeuvre de Fukase, notamment celles consacrées à son père (Memories of Father), sans oublier celle sur les chats, y compris le sien, Sasuke, et ses fameux autoportraits pris dans une baignoire, avec un appareil étanche ("Bukubuku") ou en duos ("Berobero") qui se touchent la langue et qu'ils coloriera par la suite. Fukase aura tout expérimenté au cours de sa vie professionnelle et ce travail longtemps resté dans l'ombre, où la dramaturgie côtoie autant l'ironie que la provocation, méritait un ouvrage complet, d'autant que la plupart de ses parutions se limitaient jusqu'alors à son pays natal.
