D'extraordinaires progrès ont été réalisés en génétique ces cinq dernières années, en particulier le séquençage complet du génome de centaines d'organismes, des bactéries à l'homme, a révolutionné notre compréhension des êtres vivants et de leurs interrelations. Génomes est un ouvrage exceptionnel qui rend compte de tous ces progrès. Il est divisé en 4 parties principales : le génome humain et les transcriptions, l'étude du génome, en particulier la cartographie et le séquençage du génome, le fonctionnement du génome, avec des chapitres importants sur la synthèse du RNA, la régulation de l'activité du génome, les modalités de réplication du génome, le clonage, les applications, notamment médicales. Dans les 16 chapitres du livre, l'auteur a eu le souci constant d'une pédagogie la plus efficace possible : avec, en début de chapitre, la liste des 10 à 15 points importants à retenir, avec de nombreux encadrés qui mettent en valeur les points clés du chapitre, des notes techniques encadrées, de nombreuses figures en 5 couleurs très clairement commentées, des encadrés de couleur différente sur l'état de la recherche sur la question traitée , chaque chapitre se termine par 10 à 15 questions, pour s'auto-évaluer et par 5 à 10 problèmes. L'ouvrage se termine par un glossaire de 1 200 termes.
