On connaît depuis longtemps les rapports étroits entre la survenue d'un cancer, quelle qu'en soit la localisation, et les réactions immunologiques au sens le plus large du terme , mais il n'y avait pas d'ouvrage en langue française consacré à ces problèmes très particuliers. Immunologie des cancers a le mérite de combler cette lacune. Après un chapitre introductif sur la réponse immunitaire anti-tumorale, les auteurs traitent de façon très moderne et exhaustive des aspects fondamentaux de cette réponse dans plusieurs chapitres consacrés successivement aux progéniteurs lymphoïdes, à l'activation lymphocytaire, aux effecteurs cytotoxiques lymphocytaires, aux cellules NK, aux lymphocytes T, à l'origine et à la physiologie des cellules dendritiques, à l'endocytose, aux antigènes tumoraux, aux cytokines. Puis, ils abordent les conséquences de l'échappement tumoral à l'immuno-surveillance, les aspects de l'apoptose ou mort cellulaire programmée. La dernière partie de l'ouvrage Immunologie des cancers comporte 5 chapitres traitant des aspects thérapeutiques modernes en immuno-cancérologie : la thérapie génique, la thérapie cellulaire, la greffe de moelle allogénique, les approches vaccinales et l'utilisation des anticorps monoclonaux dans le traitement des cancers. Le dernier chapitre expose enfin les causes et les conséquences de la transformation tumorale.
