English summary: This volume seeks to reconcile antiquity with modern times by proposing a cohabitation or fusion of ancient and modern cities. Book II begins with a study of all the hot springs that are still visible or marked by the headwaters. By doing this, Biondo continues with the survey method used in the first book, where he had rigorously followed the development of the city established by the Mirabilias (its walls, doors, etc.), which would be ruled by their successors until the 16th century. Le retour aux sources n'est pas cependant synonyme de retour en arriere: Rome restauree, dans un bel elan humaniste, envisage de reconcilier Antiquite et temps modernes en proposant la cohabitation, voire la fusion, des cites antique et moderne. Le livre II s'ouvre sur une etude de tous les ensembles thermaux encore visibles ou signales par les sources qui ne dissimulent rien de leur origine, de leur histoire et de leur fonction. Ce faisant, Biondo renouvelle la methode d'enquete eprouvee au livre I puisqu'il avait rigoureusement suivi l'ordre de progression dans la ville etabli depuis les Mirabilia (les murailles, les portes, etc) et que reprendront ses successeurs jusqu'au XVIe siecle. Le livre II combine les deux methodes, progression topographique et regroupement typologique des monuments, puisque Biondo progresse par avancees successives vers le cur de la Ville et notamment le Forum republicain. Cette redefinition de la methode a mi-parcours ne resulte pas d'un constat d'echec, elle a au contraire pour fonction de permettre un approfondissement des exposes. Tout se passe comme si, progressant vers le cur de Rome, l'humaniste progressait aussi vers le cur du sujet: la denomination, l'analyse et non plus seulement la localisation des edifices.
