Il s'agit d'un recueil de preparations medicales, precede d'une epitre dedicatoire adressee a Calliste, affranchi de l'empereur Claude. Cette epitre, qui sert de Preface a l'ouvrage, constitue un texte d'une grande importance pour l'histoire des idees, comme expression de la deontologie medicale a Rome, au 1er siecle apres J.-C. C'est le plus ancien temoignage sur le Serment d'Hippocrate. L'etablissement du texte tient compte de l'ensemble de la tradition directe et indirecte et exploite de nouveaux temoignages de la tradition indirecte, qui n'avaient pas ete utilises dans les editions precedentes. En outre, cette edition presente la premiere traduction francaise a ce jour. Les notes critiques eclairent le texte dans ses aspects historiques et techniques, permettant notamment d'etudier l'apport de Scribonius Largus a la constitution de la langue medicale latine, et la survie des compositions de cet auteur chez Galien ou dans la litterature medicale latine tardive. Completees par un appendice sur les ingredients d'origine vegetale, minerale et animale, elles constituent un ensemble precieux pour la connaissance de la pharmacopee dans le monde romain du 1er siecle ap. J.-C.
