Composee de plus de soixante-dix ingredients dont l'opium et la chair de vipere, d'ou elle tire son nom, la theriaque est le fleuron de la pharmacopee grecque antique. Rapidement elevee au rang de panacee, transmise et popularisee par les litteratures syriaque, arabe, latine et hebraique, la celebre recette de la theriaque elaboree au 1er siecle de notre ere par Andromaque, medecin de Neron, s'est ensuite maintenue sans grand changement jusqu'a l'aube du XXe siecle. C'est cette recette originale d'Andromaque que l'auteur du traite, vraisemblablement un archiatre de peu posterieur au medecin Galien, retranscrit ici sous sa double forme, en vers et en prose. Apres avoir brievement rappele l'histoire du fameux electuaire, l'auteur du traite decrypte a l'intention de son dedicataire, un riche romain du nom de Pison feru de medecine et de philosophie, les differentes etapes de sa preparation et dresse le catalogue des maladies dont la theriaque est capable de triompher. Basee sur l'examen de l'ensemble des temoins conserves (grecs, arabes et latins), la presente edition, precedee d'une ample introduction notamment consacree a l'histoire de la litterature theriaque et au probleme du melange dans la pharmacologie antique, est accompagnee de la premiere traduction francaise du traite ainsi que d'abondantes notes critiques, historiques et philologiques. About the Author Galien était philosophe et médecin. Véronique Boudon-Millot est professeur à l'université Paris Sorbonne et directrice du laboratoire Médecine grecque (CNRS-Paris IV). Elle est l'origine de l'édition princeps de Ne pas se chagriner de Galien (2007) dont elle dirige l'édition pour la CUF.
