Historiciser le mal, une édition critique de Mein Kampf. Avertissement aux lecteurs. Historiciser le mal propose une analyse critique, une mise en contexte, une déconstruction, ligne par ligne, de Mein Kampf, une des sources malheureusement fondamentales pour comprendre l'histoire du XXe siècle. Nous avons agi en responsabilité en mettant en place un dispositif global afin de respecter l'exigence scientifique et éthique qui s'imposait. La nouvelle traduction présentée dans Historiciser le mal a été confiée à l'un des meilleurs traducteurs de l'allemand en langue française, Olivier Mannoni, qui a ensuite travaillé avec une équipe d'historiens, tous spécialistes du nazisme, de la Shoah et de l'histoire des Juifs. La rédaction d'Historiciser le mal a été menée dans le cadre d'un partenariat signé par Fayard avec l'Institut d'Histoire de Munich, qui a publié en 2016 une édition critique de Mein Kampf en Allemagne, un travail de référence qui a mobilisé une équipe d'historiens allemands. Historiciser le mal a été rédigé par un comité d'historiens, dirigé par Florent Brayard, qui a traduit, adapté, prolongé les 3 000 notes de l'édition allemande et rédigé une introduction générale et 27 introductions de chapitres. Dans la forme, les notes encadrent ainsi la nouvelle traduction et sont indissociables de sa lecture. L'ensemble compte près de 1 000 pages et constitue un jalon historiographique sur la genèse du nazisme. En définitive, l'appareil scientifique inclus dans Historiciser le mal est deux fois plus volumineux que la traduction du texte de Hitler. Il n'est pas question, bien évidemment, que la publication d'Historiciser le mal puisse être lucrative. Ainsi, la Fondation Auschwitz-Birkenau, chargée de la conservation du site du camp de concentration et d'extermination, percevra des droits au premier exemplaire vendu et la totalité des bénéfices qui pourraient être issus de la vente d'Historiciser le mal. Pour savoir où l'on va, il est indispensable de comprendre d'où l'on vient. Nous sommes convaincus que le travail des historiens est nécessaire pour lutter contre l'obscurantisme, le complotisme et le refus de la science et du savoir en des temps troublés, marqués par la montée des populismes. C'est le sens de notre démarche d'éditeur.
