Demeure des rois de France devenue le musée le plus prestigieux du monde, le Louvre est riche de huit siècles d'histoire. Plus d'une centaine d'auteurs dressent ici un panorama synthétique de son histoire, depuis les origines jusqu'à nos jours. Le domaine que forment le palais du Louvre, celui des Tuileries (désormais disparu) et leur jardin voit se dérouler l'histoire de France. L'évolution, au fil des siècles, de son architecture, de son décor peint, sculpté et planté, de son ameublement, a forgé les destinées de l'art français. Ici se déploient, depuis 1793, le musée du Louvre et ses collections. Leur histoire, leur constitution et leur aménagement, mais aussi l'évolution de leur administration et le portrait des acteurs qui les ont fait vivre, sont racontés grâce à des sources nombreuses, documentaires et visuelles, très souvent inédites. Depuis sa genèse sous l'Ancien Régime, sa création sous la Révolution, son développement sous l'Empire, son ouverture aux mondes lointains sous la Restauration, son agrandissement sous Napoléon III et ses multiples phases de restructuration jusqu'à l'épanouissement du "Grand Louvre" et aux mutations les plus récentes, le musée voit toutes les étapes de son histoire analysées et détaillées. Documents d'archives, gravures, plans, photographies anciennes et modernes des salles ou des bâtiments illustrent cette vaste synthèse et confèrent à cet ouvrage un caractère exceptionnel. Complétant cette démarche chronologique, un dictionnaire thématique donne une vision transversale des principaux éléments constitutifs du musée.
