Il est clair que l'imaginaire historique d'un Français de l'an 2000 doit davantage à la télévision des années 50 à 80 qu'au " petit Lavisse " ou au Malet et Isaac. Decaux, Castelot, Lorenzi, Jammot... La caméra explore le temps, Jacquou le Croquant, Holocauste, Les Grandes Batailles, Les Cathares... La plupart des grands noms et des titres phares qui jalonnent dans les mémoires la marche triomphale du nouveau média ont partie liée avec l'histoire. En mettant Alexandre Dumas, Balzac ou Duby en images, en présentant des archives filmées (par exemple celles qui ont révélé la Shoah aux générations nées après guerre), en produisant des dramatiques, en donnant à des chercheurs de métier l'occasion d'apparaître à l'écran et en incitant des journalistes à se tourner vers les temps anciens, en ouvrant des débats sur des événements ou des périodes controversés, voire douloureux, la télévision a éveillé la conscience historique d'une large fraction du public. Mais l'a-t-elle fait durablement ? C'est moins sûr et là gît le paradoxe. Quand à une télévision de l'offre, volontariste, s'est substituée une télévision de la demande, avide d'audience, l'histoire a perdu une part du terrain si glorieusement conquis. Les chaînes ont-elles seulement pris acte d'une désaffection due au recul de la discipline dans l'enseignement et au dépérissement du sentiment national ? Faut-il invoquer la politique des responsables des programmes, ou bien le média est-il par nature incompatible avec l'évocation du passé ? Isabelle Veyrat-Masson, chargée de recherche au CNRS, historienne et sociologue des médias, interroge l'histoire de la télévision sur la longue durée en posant des questions aussi brûlantes que mal résolues. Parmi celles-ci : quel est le rôle de l'histoire et surtout de la télévision dans la société ; quelles sont leurs fonctions et leur influence sur les esprits ? Appuyée sur un large corpus d'archives inédites et sur une ample collecte de témoignages oraux, cette étude propose un certain nombre de réponses éloignées des stéréotypes.
