Créée en 1919 pour assurer la relève de ses deux devancières, la IIIe Internationale, communiste (Komintern ou Comintern selon les divers acronymes adoptés par les langues occidentales), se voulut à la fois un parti mondial et un appareil international capable de coordonner les lunes à l'échelle de la planète : le succès des bolcheviks en Russie, fragile, n'avait pas suffi à lancer la révolution dans tous les pays : écrasée en Hongrie et plusieurs fois battue en Allemagne, celle-ci y avorta en 1923. Quand elle fut dissoute par Staline en 1943, l'Internationale n'était plus qu'un organisme policier au service de l'Etat soviétique, épuré et domestiqué comme il se devait. Ayant dès 1923 imposé à ses sections des aventures ou des alliances paralysantes, disposant de leurs directions à son gré, traquant les esprits indépendants, elle n'avait conduit aucun de ses partis au pouvoir. Comme le parti en Russie, elle avait fait l'objet de purges massives et avait perdu des dizaines, sinon des centaines de milliers de militants. Pourtant, la fleur du mouvement révolutionnaire (ouvriers, soldats, femmes, étudiants, intellectuels...) lui avait longtemps consacré son dévouement, son ardeur, parfois sa vie. Des vingt-quatre années - les unes lumineuses, les autres calamiteuses voire sanglantes - d'une organisation qui aura tant fait peur aux régimes bourgeois, Pierre Broué, biographe de Trotsky, fait un récit dépouillé des poncifs de toute sorte attachés à la IIIe Internationale. Avec minutie et chaleur, cet infatigable découvreur d'archives fait revivre une foule de combattants obscurs et oubliés (quand ce n'est pas ostracisés) et, de l'Indonésie au Chili, évoque de multiples épisodes passés aux pertes et profits par l'Histoire ou par les historiens - pas tous staliniens. Il donne là une somme - à la fois épopée et instrument de travail - d'une densité et d'une richesse d'information exceptionnelles.
