Ce volume présente l'édition critique et la traduction française de 64 lettres d'Evagre qui ne sont pour la plupart conservées intégralement qu'en syriaque. La Lettre sur la foi, composée à Constantinople vers 381, alors que l'auteur se trouvait auprès de Grégoire de Nazianze, est comme son propre "Discours théologique" sur la Trinité, dirigé contre l'arianisme et le courant pneumatomaque. Le corpus des 62 lettres est formé de pièces d'inégale longueur, allant du simple billet à la longue "conférence spirituelle" . Toutes datent de la période monastique égyptienne (entre 383 et 399) et ont des accents plus personnels. Elles nous font entendre la voix de quelqu'un qui essaie de concilier les exigences de l'anachorèse et celles de l'amitié et qui sous couvert d'humilité délivre un enseignement spirituel de très haute valeur. Bien que dépourvues d'adresses, sauf la première, ces lettres peuvent être dans quelques cas favorables replacées dans leur contexte d'écriture. Parmi les destinataires probables figurent Mélanie l'Ancienne et Rufin, rencontrés à Jérusalem, à qui le "philosophe du désert" doit son engagement monastique, mais aussi Jean de Jérusalem et Grégoire de Nazianze. La Grande Lettre enfin offre un tableau grandiose des relations entre Dieu et sa création. Elle nous montre comment, après la chute et les divisions qu'elle a engendrées, les "natures raisonnables" retrouvent leur unité originelle et, tels les fleuves à la mer, se mêlent à l'océan divin. Paul Géhin, Directeur de recherche émérite au CNRS, ancien responsable de la Section grecque de l'IRHT (1997-2011), a déjà publié dans la collection sept volumes évagriens, seul (SC 340, 397, 514 et 589) ou en collaboration (SC 438, 614 et 615). Il poursuit maintenant l'édition des Képhalaia gnostica et des Skemmata.
