Hermes Trismegiste est un auteur imaginaire. Son existence est insoutenable, ses uvres apocryphes, leur redacteur inconnu. Et pourtant, resistant a toutes les critiques, il a connu plusieurs renaissances. Aujourd'hui les specialistes y trouvent l'expression d'authentiques idees egyptiennes et les historiens de la philosophie analysent ses exercices spirituels. Composes au debut de notre ere, ces ecrits philosophiques n'exposent pas un systeme, mais une voie, c'est-a-dire une progression mentale, ou les valeurs s'affirment a chaque etape. La fortune d'Hermes est due a l'idee qu'il incarne: la certitude que l'homme, loin d'avoir perdu la gloire du paradis, peut trouver, dans les mythes ancestraux, sa memoire et les profondeurs de son esprit, la force de remonter jusqu'a l'intellect divin dont il est issu. Trismegiste est-il le troisieme et le plus grand d'une lignee de sages ou est-ce le meme qui s'est incarne trois fois pour enseigner les trois puissances divines ? Les textes grecs et latins ont ete publies dans la CUF en 4 volumes, de 1941 a 1954, par A. D. Nock et A.-J. Festugiere. Depuis, d'autres temoins ont ete decouverts, en grec, en copte, en armenien, en syriaque et en arabe. Parmi ces Paralipomenes, se revelent quelques pierres angulaires de l'edifice hermetique.
