La troisième et dernière cinquantaine de psaumes (100150) est la mieux représentée parmi les commentaires d'Hilaire de Poitiers. A la suite des cinq traités de la première cinquantaine (SC 515) et des vingt de la deuxième (SC 565, 603, 605), trente-trois psaumes de la troisième (118-150) ont inspiré à l'évêque des commentaires spirituels. Parmi eux, les Psaumes 119 à 133 occupent une place particulière et constituent un véritable "psautier dans le psautier". Ces quinze "cantiques des degrés" étaient récités par les juifs pieux qui montaient en pèlerinage au Temple de Jérusalem, en chantant aussi bien leur détresse que leur confiance en Dieu. Cette ascension est comprise par Hilaire comme la route de tout homme vers son Sauveur. Chaque verset donne l'occasion d'une profonde méditation sur le sens de la vie. L'appel pressant du premier verset (J'ai crié vers toi dans ma souffrance - Ps 119, 1) aboutit à une sereine invocation (Que le Seigneur te bénisse, lui qui a fait le ciel et la terre - Ps 133, 6). Le présent volume donne, pour la première fois en français, la traduction des traités sur les Psaumes 127 à 133.
