Cette traduction a choisi de considérer le texte grec de la Bible non comme le décalque de l'hébreu, mais comme une création littéraire linguistiquement remarquable et historiquement féconde. Le texte est celui d'Alfred Rahlfs, « Septuaginta, id est Vetus Testamentum Graeca iuxta LXX interpretes », Stuttgart, 1935. La traduction est reprise des volumes correspondants dans la collection « La Bible d'Alexandrie », dont l'édition, pourvue d'un riche apparat, se poursuit aux éditions du Cerf. Après la parution des cinq premiers livres de la Bible (la « Loi » ou le « Pentateuque ») en volumes séparés, où la traduction du texte grec est accompagnée d'introductions et de notes techniques, voici en un seul volume, toute la traduction avec des notes simplifiées et une introduction très complète visant à aider un très large public à apprécier l'importance d'une telle édition en offrant, sans technicité inutile, les connaissances indispensables sur le texte, son histoire, son importance pour les générations ultérieures (on se rappelle que la traduction grecque des Septante fut celle qu'utilisèrent les premières générations chrétiennes). La présente édition est bilingue (texte original grec et traduction française), mais on a veillé à ce que ceux qui ignorent le grec n'aient pas de difficultés à l'utiliser. Sous la direction de Marguerite Harl, professeur honoraire de Grec à la Sorbonne, toute une équipe de spécialistes de la Septante a collaboré à ce volume pour en faire un instrument biblique de très grande qualité, tout en sachant qu'une partie du public sera plus intéressée par le texte lui-même que par ce qui l'accompagne (la Septante étant le texte biblique utilisé dans le monde orthodoxe).
