Die aufgefundenen hebräischen Handschriften zu Ben Sira enthalten mittlerweile ca. 64% des hebräischen Textes und weisen untereinander zum Teil erhebliche Abweichungen auf. In der Forschung greift man daher auf die mehr oder weniger vollständigen griechischen, aber auch auf syrische Übersetzungen zurück. Die griechische Version, die älteste und bedeutendste, enthält aber innerhalb der Kapitel 30-36 Vertauschungen. Die Texteditionen richten sich nun zum Teil am griechischen Text aus, stellen aber teilweise die ursprüngliche Ordnung wieder her oder benutzen eine neue Zählart. Die Zählsynopse möchte den Wirrwarr unterschiedlicher Zählungen beheben und basiert auf einer neu konzipierten polyglotten (hebräischen, syrischen, griechischen und lateinischen) Textedition, die im Winter 2003/2004 in dieser Reihe vorgelegt wird. In diesem kolometrisch gegliederten Text sind alle Überhänge des Griechischen (GII), Hebräischen und Syrischen eingearbeitet. So entstand eine durchlaufende Zählung, die den griechischen Text nach der klassischen Edition Zieglers im wesentlichen übernimmt und im eben genannten Sinne ergänzt. Eingearbeitet wurden griechische Editionen (Ziegler, Swete, Rahlfs), die hebräischen Editionen (Sefer, Beentjes), die syrische Edition (de Lagarde, Mossul, Ambrosianus, Calduch-Benages und Liesen, Peshitta-Institut/Leiden), die lateinische Edition (Rom, Stuttgart), die Einheitsübersetzung, der revidierte Luthertext, die New Revised English Standard Version und Sauer/JSHRZ.
