Au cours de l'été 1816 à la villa Diodati, au bord du Léman, Mary Shelley n'est pas la seule à engendrer une créature de papier monstrueuse. Le médecin de Lord Byron, Polidori, qui participe également au concours d'histoires macabres organisé par son employeur, fait entrer le vampire en littérature. Le Vampire est un texte fondateur qui apporte l'impulsion décisive permettant au genre gothique de donner naissance à l'une de ses modalités les plus spectaculaires : la littérature vampirique. Avant Polidori, le vampire était un vuIgaire revenant cantonné à la tradition folklorique et aux récits légendaires. En faisant de lui un personnage éminemment byronien - aristocratique, désenchanté, séduisant ténébreux -, il invente une figure canonique qui continue d'essaimer aujourd'hui. Depuis le début du XIX ? siècle, la littérature britannique palpitait au rythme de pulsions sanguinaires. Avec la relation ambiguë mais cruellement prédatrice qui unit la très destructrice Géraldine à l'héroïne éponyme de Christabel (1797 et 1800), Coleridge a préparé les sensibilités à une mise en discours explicite de la morsure infligée par un revenant. Robert Southey, dans un épisode de Thalaba (1801), puis Byron, à la faveur d'un passage du Giaour (1813), ont l'un et l'autre franchi un pas symbolique crucial en utilisant non seulement le concept mais le terme de "vampire". Christabel fait l'ouverture de ce volume, où l'on trouvera en appendice des extraits des deux poèmes séminaux de Southey et Byron. Un autre jalon est posé par Sheridan Le Fanu et Carmilla (1872). Ouvertement saphique, cette nouvelle met en scène un vampire femelle qui envoûte sa proie. La séduction est, littéralement, effrayante, et la prédation létale fait écho aux pulsions sexuelles refoulées de la victime. Un autre écrivain irlandais, Bram Stoker, saura s'en souvenir vingt-cinq ans plus tard. On ne présente plus sa création, le comte Dracula, ce grand saigneur. Reste que les adaptations cinématographiques se sont par trop éloignées de l'oeuvre originelle, et qu'il est bon de revenir au texte de Stoker pour saisir tout ce que son roman a de subversif. Dans Dracula (1897), projection des ténèbres de notre propre nature, la vie et la mort tissent un entrelacs lugubre, et la répulsion et le désir s'entremêlent. Quelques mois plus tard, Florence Marryat publie Le Sang du vampire et propose une variante féminine et insolite du mythe. Née sous le coup d'une malédiction héréditaire, Harriet Brandt, métisse originaire des AntiIles, est douée d'une propension fatale à faire du mal à ceux dont elle s'entiche, et c'est avec gourmandise qu'elle apprécie ses semblables. Autour d'elle, les êtres qui succombent à son charme exotique finissent par succomber tout court, tant ses cajoleries ou ses étreintes épuisent leur vitalité et se révèlent mortelles. Par un glissement sémantique, la jeune fille innocente en mal d'affection vampirise ses proches, et pour ce faire n'a même pas besoin de faire couler le sang.
