Ce volume rassemble vingt-six textes précédemment parus (à une exception près : l'Evangile de Judas) dans les éditions respectivement consacrées au Nouveau Testament, aux Ecrits apocryphes chrétiens (2 vol.) et aux Ecrits gnostiques. Certains s'intitulent "Evangile", d'autres portent des titres différents, parfois surprenants, mais ils ont tous comme caractéristique commune, depuis les quatre évangiles intégrés au Nouveau Testament jusqu'au Livre du coq, à l'Evangile de Judas (traduction inédite) ou à l'Evangile selon Thomas, de rapporter ce qui concerne Jésus de Nazareth et son entourage immédiat : ses antécédents familiaux, sa naissance, ses faits et gestes, ses discours et ses paroles, sa passion et sa résurrection, ou encore, comme l'Evangile de la vérité, de proposer une réinterprétation méditative de son message. Composés entre la fin du I ?? siècle de notre ère et la fin de l'Antiquité et transmis en diverses langues, depuis le grec jusqu'à l'éthiopien, ces écrits témoignent éloquemment de la vitalité des traditions et légendes qui se sont cristallisées autour du personnage de Jésus de Nazareth et qui ont nourri l'imaginaire des croyants, des artistes ou des écrivains, aussi bien au Moyen Age qu'à l'époque contemporaine. Ils sont offerts ici en une traduction française accompagnée de leur appareil critique intégral et d'une préface inédite.
