Ce volume contient plusieurs oeuvres majeures. Initialement, le projet d'Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra, livre ici retraduit, était d'exposer la notion d'éternel retour sur laquelle se concluait Le Gai Savoir. Non seulement Nietzsche y rompt avec le genre aphoristique (auquel il reviendra), mais il y nourrit une ambition plus profonde que ne l'indiquent le lyrisme et le symbolisme de ce poème philosophique. Il espérait en effet y faire entendre la lutte des instincts à l'oeuvre dans sa propre pensée, et faire coexister le pathos musical et l'acuité de la réflexion lorsqu'elle parvient à d'irréductibles contradictions, comme celle de l'éternel retour, notion qu'il nomme aussi "midi et éternité", cette heure illusoirement immobile et sans ombre, éternellement vouée à n'être que fugitive. Le succès dont Zarathoustra a joui après la mort de Nietzsche a parfois occulté le reste de son oeuvre. Or Par-delà bien et mal et Pour la généalogie de la morale offrent un exposé plus abouti de sa pensée. A commencer par sa conception de la "volonté de puissance", sur laquelle il annonce alors préparer un ouvrage. Il abandonnera ce projet, utilisant ce qu'il en avait écrit dans Crépuscule des idoles et dans L'Antéchrist. Le livre publié en 1901 sous le titre La Volonté de puissance par sa soeur est un montage posthume qui falsifi e le projet originel. Chez Nietzsche, "volonté de puissance" désigne un projet et un concept, non un livre. Le volume se clôt sur Ecce homo, qui inaugure une nouvelle forme d'exposition de la pensée philosophique et propose un panorama de l'oeuvre de Nietzsche.
