Se reúnen en este volumen III de las Obras Completas de Nietzsche las tres obras de su primera madurez, redactadas entre 1878 y 1882 tras su retirada de la Universidad de Basilea para entregarse a una nueva vida como filósofo errante. A Humano, demasiado humano, Nietzsche le puso como subtítulo "Un libro para espíritus libres", y lo calificó, hacia el final de su vida, de "monumento a una crisis". Es decir, lo que expresa, sobre todo, es la liberación de su espíritu de los ideales decadentes y estetizantes de Wagner y Schopenhauer, a los que había estado ligado durante su juventud. Aurora, en cambio, nos hace sentir a un Nietzsche que ha tomado ya posesión de sí mismo y ha encontrado, como impulso y guía de su actividad, la "pasión del conocimiento". El análisis crítico de la moral que contiene, realizado al hilo de una inteligente y originalísima discusión de los planteamientos de Kant y Schopenhauer, prepara y preludia lo tratado después en La genealogía de la moral. Por último, La gaya ciencia, compuesto cuando su autor se encuentra ya en la cima de su capacidad creativa, es, en palabras del propio Nietzsche, su libro más personal y, sin duda, uno de los de mayor contenido y profundidad filosófica. Cuestiona el integrismo de la verdad que domina la tradición filosófica, y reconoce la vida como única fuente de todo valor. Busca una reconciliación audaz entre ciencia y arte, y da forma ya a los grandes temas de la filosofía nietzscheana: la muerte de Dios, el nihilismo, el papel de la verdad y de la voluntad de verdad, el eterno retorno y la actitud ante el valor a dar al sufrimiento.
