Ce volume donne à voir toutes les facettes de l'oeuvre de Malraux. Le romancier y côtoie l'essayiste, le penseur de tous les arts - cinéma, peinture, sculpture, littérature - et du Musée imaginaire, l'(anti-)mémorialiste, et l'orateur dont la voix retentit dans "la nuit de décembre à Paris, avec des étoiles glacées au-dessus de la découpure des cheminées de Daumier", pour accompagner Jean Moulin au Panthéon. Cette voix en apparence officielle a parfois couvert celle de l'écrivain. L'une et l'autre sont pourtant au service d'une même réflexion sur la condition de l'homme. Le titre du roman de 1933, La Condition humaine, pourrait être celui de l'oeuvre tout entière. Au tragique de l'Histoire, qui fait la toile de fond des romans et, aussi bien, celle des écrits mémoriels, répondent toujours, chez Malraux, des scènes de fraternité, parmi les plus fortes que l'on ait jamais écrites. A la pensée de la mort succède la grâce fugitive d'un pur étonnement de vivre. Au monde tel qu'il est s'oppose la création artistique, qui ne transcrit pas le réel, mais rivalise avec lui. Partout, cette "avidité d'absolu" que Malraux avait perçue chez Goya. Partout aussi, cette touche de farfelu grâce à laquelle l'écrivain, sa vie durant, a entendu faire contrepoids à l'Histoire et saper l'illusion d'un monde en ordre. "Me croyez-vous mort ?" lui écrivait Picasso, que l'on avait oublié d'inviter à une exposition de ses propres oeuvres. "Me croyez-vous ministre ?" lui répondit Malraux. Malraux, le croyez-vous ministre ? Il l'a été, et non des moindres, dans une fidélité souvent mal comprise à ses engagements de toujours. Mais il fut avant tout un écrivain. Quarante ans après sa mort, où en sommes-nous avec Malraux écrivain ? Ce volume est l'une des réponses possibles à cette question. Il propose une traversée de tout l'univers des formes explorées par Malraux, la (re)découverte d'ouvrages et de textes majeurs, inégalement célèbres, et l'occasion de percevoir la profonde unité d'une oeuvre qui formulait, au siècle dernier, toutes les interrogations qui agitent notre temps et nos vies.
