Les derniers livres d'Yves Bonnefoy (1923-2016) expriment son désir de transmettre le legs de la poésie par-delà la mort. "Lègue-nous de ne pas mourir désespéré", lit-on dans L'heure présente (2011). Quant à L'Echarpe rouge (2016), c'est un "livre de famille" testamentaire en même temps que l'histoire d'une vocation : "Il se trouve que j'étais apte à me vouer à l'emploi disons poétique de la parole. . ". La Pléiade fut pour Bonnefoy l'occasion de porter sur son oeuvre un regard ordonnateur. Il choisit le titre du volume, Ouvres poétiques, sans céder sur son désir de faire figurer au sommaire quelques textes brefs que l'on qualifierait spontanément d'essais. Le plan serait chronologique. Alors que certaines éditions antérieures associaient des livres ou des recueils relevant de temporalités différentes, il a défait ces "recueils de recueils" pour revenir au plus près des dates des éditions originales. Le grand recueil de 1987, par exemple, Récits en rêve, a éclaté, sans que se perde l'expression récits en rêve, qui désigne chez Bonnefoy une inspiration essentielle ; elle apparaît désormais en sous-titre de certains livres. Tous les livres ou recueils poétiques, vers, prose, ou vers et prose, sont présents. Bonnefoy ne se reniait pas ; il a souhaité donner dans les appendices quelques textes rares, bien qu'ils soient désormais loin de lui. Il a voulu aussi que soit présente son oeuvre de traducteur, de Shakespeare à Yeats, de Pétrarque à Leopardi. Enfin il a ouvert à ses éditeurs les portes de son atelier. Ses manuscrits ont pu être consultés. Ils sont utilisés En marge des oeuvres, où l'on trouvera quelques textes et fragments inédits.
