Description
Homme-orchestre, touche-à-tout inspiré qui faisait son miel de tous les genres et de tous les sujets, Thomas De Quincey (1785-1859) est, pour beaucoup de lecteurs français, " seulement " l'auteur des Confessions d'un mangeur d'opium anglais. Traduit successivement par Musset et Baudelaire (qui en tire la moitié de ses Paradis artificiels), ce livre phare inspira, il est vrai, des générations d'écrivains : Balzac, Poe, Gautier, Huysmans... Parce que le portrait des autres est l'une des façons les plus justes de s'auto-dépeindre, De Quincey, créant un genre nouveau, mêla souvent autobiographie et biographie, notamment dans ses Souvenirs de la région des Lacs et des poètes lakistes. Ami intime, entre autres figures du premier romantisme, de deux des plus grands poètes anglais, Wordsworth et Coleridge, il est un portraitiste à l'oeil acéré et à la dent dure, particulièrement pour ses anciennes idoles : la description de Wordsworth coupant les pages d'un livre à l'aide d'un couteau beurré le dispute en raillerie aux célèbres Derniers Jours d'Emmanuel Kant. Les liens qu'il tisse, dans Suspiria de profundis surtout, entre la souffrance de l'adulte et les "malheurs" de l'enfance, aussi bien que le rôle central qu'il accorde aux rêves (ou aux rêveries liées à l'opium), décrits dans une prose poétique qui contribue à sa réputation de styliste, font de lui un précurseur de la psychanalyse. Borges, qui compte au nombre de ses admirateurs fervents et partage son goût pour tout ce qui touche aux mots et à l'érudition en général, adoptera le genre si original de ses essais mêlés de fiction (La Malle-poste anglaise, Du heurt à la porte dans Macbeth...). L'art de De Quincey, c'est enfin, comme dans De l'assassinat considéré comme un des Beaux-Arts, celui de l'humour noir poussé à son paroxysme.
