Anselme de Cantorbéry : "Je tendais vers Dieu et je suis tombé sur moi-même ! ". En propageant par l'écrit différents exercices - lecture, méditation, prière, contemplation -, des clercs ont inventé la spiritualité comme un art de l'intériorité, une manière de reconnaître la présence d'une transcendance dans l'intimité humaine. A la fin du XIe siècle, la spiritualité est à l'origine d'un genre littéraire, la "méditation". Au XIIe, siècle de l'éveil de la conscience et de l'intériorisation, elle devient une technique spirituelle. Du XIIIe au XVe, c'est une tradition proposée au plus grand nombre ; les textes spirituels atteignent des laïcs, hommes et femmes. Inséparable de l'essor d'une civilisation du livre, le développement de la spiritualité fait du texte le moyen privilégié pour comprendre le monde extérieur et se déchiffrer soi-même. Depuis les méditations fondatrices d'Anselme (XIe siècle) jusqu'à la simplicité de l'Imitation du Christ (XVe siècle) en passant par l'incendie d'amour de Bonaventure (XIIIe siècle), sont ici réunis les écrits les plus diffusés au Moyen Age. Même s'ils ne relèvent pas de la mystique entendue comme une science de l'âme constituée en discours autonome (qui sera la mystique de l'âge moderne), ils peuvent être à bon droit qualifiés de mystiques. Quant à leurs auteurs, ils ont en partage la prose d'art latine et une sensibilité littéraire. Pour eux, écrire est en soi un exercice spirituel. Aussi leur prose se lit-elle souvent comme de la poésie. Qu'en faire aujourd'hui ? Entre une lecture dans la foi et celle du "développement personnel" (qui est une spiritualité sans Dieu), libre à chacun de mesurer la distance qui nous sépare de ces oeuvres, de reconnaître la proximité qu'elles entretiennent avec notre culture, et de se poser les questions qu'elles soulèvent et qui sont toujours les nôtres.
