Les oeuvres publiées dans ces deux volumes furent longtemps qualifiées, en France, de "Drames historiques". Mais l'esthétique des pièces de Shakespeare n'a évidemment rien à voir avec celle du Cromwell de Hugo. C'est sous l'intitulé "Histoires" (Histories), qui figure explicitement au titre de l'une d'entre elles, L'Histoire d'Henry IV, que les éditeurs des Ouvres complètes de 1623 publièrent dix des douze pièces reprises ici. Shakespeare y met en scène l'histoire d'Angleterre, hantée par le spectre de la guerre civile. De Richard II, monarque renversé, et d'Henry IV, usurpateur légitimé, jusqu'à Richard III, le dernier Plantagenêt, il retrace les ruptures dynastiques qui ont abouti à l'avènement des Tudor, dont la dernière représentante, Elisabeth I ?? , règne encore quand il écrit. Il reste fidèle, pour l'essentiel, au modèle transmis comme "vrai" par l'historiographie de son temps ; les chroniqueurs, par exemple, propagent presque tous la légende d'un Richard III démoniaque et contrefait, meurtrier et tyran régicide dont la Providence veut qu'il tombe sous les coups de l'ange de lumière qu'est le premier souverain Tudor. Mais Shakespeare écrit en poète, non en historien. Mieux, c'est en écrivant l'histoire qu'il devient poète : sa carrière de dramaturge commence avec les trois parties d'Henry VI, qui le rendent imméditement célèbre. Ces Histoires mêlent le mythe, l'épopée et la tragédie. Réclamant "un royaume pour théâtre, des princes pour acteurs", Shakespeare met en oeuvre toutes les ressources de sa poésie pour donner à voir tantôt les froids calculs de la politique machiavélienne, tantôt les "vastes champs" des batailles de France, tantôt les souffrances de l'Angleterre. Mais ces pièces mêlent aussi "les rois et les bouffons", et c'est en créateur hors norme, et non en chantre de la mythologie nationale, que Shakespeare a créé l'un de ses personnages les plus drôles et les plus inoubliables : "l'énorme montagne de chair", nommée Falstaff.
