Les textes gnostiques anciens n'étaient accessibles qu'à travers les citations des Pères de l'Eglise acharnés à les combattre, quand, en 1945, on découvrit à Nag Hammadi (Haute-Egypte) douze livres reliés en cuir et plusieurs feuillets d'un treizième : toute une bibliothèque gnostique sur papyrus, en traduction copte, qui procurait enfin la rédaction complète de plusieurs écrits discutés par les philosophes néoplatoniciens et les hérésiologues chrétiens, comme l'Evangile de vérité, attribué à Valentin, le Livre des secrets de Jean, ou le célèbre Evangile de Thomas. La Pléiade propose la première traduction française intégrale de cette bibliothèque, complétée par les textes, en partie parallèles, du manuscrit de Berlin. De genres très divers (apocalypses, évangiles et actes apocryphes, dialogues de révélation, homélies, rituels initiatiques, etc.), ces écrits relèvent de plusieurs courants. Polymorphe par essence, le gnosticisme n'a jamais constitué une religion institutionnelle. Qu'est-ce que la gnose dont se réclament les gnostiques ? C'est le pouvoir pour l'homme de recouvrer ce qu'il y a en lui de divin. La voie qui mène à cette connaissance passe à la fois par la tradition authentique des grands ancêtres, gratifiés de révélations secrètes, et par l'intuition spirituelle de chacun. Exploration de la conscience et quête des livres disparus sont les deux faces indissociables d'une même remontée vers l'être. Se connaître soi-même, c'est aussi bien connaître Dieu et le chemin de l'ascension, inverse de la déchéance d'ici-bas. La disparition des communautés gnostiques n'a pas entraîné celle de l'idée même de gnose : au seuil du XXI ? siècle, le rêve d'une connaissance totale et rédemptrice de la destinée humaine continue de hanter nos contemporains.
