"L'histoire littéraire du siècle de Shakespeare est assez peu connue, et l'on croit volontiers que "l'homme aux myriades d'âmes" a régné sur son temps comme un grand roi inattendu et solitaire", disait Maeterlinck. De fait, le prodigieux répertoire de l'Age d'or du théâtre anglais (appelé "élisabéthain", bien que les règnes de Jacques I ?? et Charles I ?? soient également concernés) paraît comme éclipsé par l'oeuvre de Shakespeare. Or il comprend des pièces majeures, dans la comédie, que Ben Jonson porte à son apogée, comme dans la tragédie qui, en Angleterre, se défie des règles classiques et pratique le mélange des genres. Maeterlinck ou Artaud ne s'y sont pas trompés, qui furent à la fois fascinés et révulsés par la noirceur de tragédies spectaculaires donnant libre cours aux passions les plus violentes, et électrisés par l'énergie qui se dégage des diamants noirs "infernalement vénéneux" composés par des "princes de l'horreur" (Maeterlinck encore). Ce répertoire fondamental a encore été assez peu porté à la scène en France, à l'exception peut-être de Dommage qu'elle soit une putain de John Ford, dont le succès de scandale ne s'est jamais démenti, ou de Volpone de Ben Jonson, mais via l'adaptation de Jules Romains. Cette anthologie donne à lire dans de nouvelles traductions un théâtre très varié - comédie des humeurs, comédie satirique, tragédie de vengeance, tragédie politique, tragédie domestique et tragi-comédie ; elle rend justice à une période flamboyante de la littérature anglaise et, au-delà du météore Marlowe et du grand Ben Jonson, fait mieux connaître les Dekker, Chapman, Middleton, Massinger, Ford ou Webster, pour qu'enfin Shakespeare puisse redevenir le contemporain de ses contemporains.
