Si Apollinaire poète ne parvient pas à faire oublier le conteur et le romancier, il faut bien constater que le critique d'art et le critique littéraire ont été rarement pris en considération. C'est ce que ce volume - qui rassemble les écrits sur l'art et sur la littérature - voudrait rectifier. Apollinaire multiplie ici les pseudonymes. Se donner tant d'êtres, s'accorder à tant de masques, c'est jouer Pessoa avant la lettre : devenant autre, Apollinaire se met dans des ailleurs qui vont lui permettre de multiplier les points de vue. L'anecdote - qu'il élève au rang de genre littéraire - va l'aider à théoriser. Car ce qui donne une unité à ces ouvres si diverses - pour ainsi dire occasionnelles - c'est l'imaginaire de l'homme, comme le notent Pierre Caizergues et Michel Décaudin dans leur préface : "Indiscrétions et potins, marqués au sceau de son humour, informations saisies au vol dans une conversation ou rapportées par des amis, anecdotes tirées du vécu ou de son insatiable curiosité livresque s'accumulent dans un ensemble d'allure hétéroclite, mais où le propos de l'écrivain et son univers imaginaire restent fondamentalement les mêmes". Ce que théorise au fond Apollinaire, c'est la fin de la mimésis : la beauté moderne doit être fondée sur une invention et sur une liberté sans limites de l'imaginaire. Exit la nature. Par-là, il devance - avec Rimbaud - tout ce que le XXe siècle croira découvrir. Les autres achevaient un monde ; ces deux-là inventent le suivant. Le nôtre encore ?
