L'édition de Fénelon dans La Pléiade comprend deux volumes et offre l'essentiel de ses ouvres. Dans le premier tome apparaît le pédagogue (L'Éducation des Filles), le précepteur choisi par Louis XIV pour son petit-fils, le duc de Bourgogne : les Fables et opuscules pédagogiques, les Dialogues des morts composés pour l'éducation d'un prince en témoignent. Ce volume offre en outre les textes relatifs à la querelle du quiétisme et le Fénelon mystique, auteur d'ouvres spirituelles. On y voit aussi un Fénelon étonnant : celui qui, dans sa Lettre à Louis XIV, se dresse face au pouvoir, pour rappeler ses devoirs à celui qui dirige la France. Le tome II et dernier s'ouvre avec Les Aventures de Télémaque (1699). Destinée à apporter à un petit-fils de Louis XIV toutes les leçons susceptibles d'instruire un futur roi, cette ouvre, dont même les détracteurs admirèrent le caractère poétique, passa pour une satire virulente de la Cour de Louis XV et connut un immense succès : plus de huit cents éditions et traductions au cours des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Le volume comprend en outre d'importants opuscules théologiques et philosophiques, des textes politiques ou pédagogiques, et aussi la célèbre Lettre à l'Académie (1714), toutes ouvres qui étaient à ce jour inaccessibles au grand public. Le style de ces pages nous donne la « sensation du bien écrit » et de la « perfection du français » qui enchantait Stendhal ; on y découvre la continuité du goût de Fénelon, des conceptions sociales et politiques, des ambitions philosophiques et apologétiques.
