Deux courants essentiels partagent l'ouvre de Bernanos. Un courant inspiré par la fiction ou courant romanesque, indissociable cependant des années 1920-1940. Un courant de caractère « politique », inspiré encore plus directement par l'histoire, auquel se rattachent des écrits, appelés d'ordinaire « pamphlets », que nous désignons ici même par les termes : « essais et écrits de combat ». Pourquoi ? Parce que le genre littéraire auquel ils appartiennent les définit beaucoup moins que l'inspiration qui leur insuffle la vie, que le but visé par l'écrivain à travers eux. Qu'il s'agisse du courant « romanesque » ou du courant « politique », ce qui fait constamment problème - et retient toute notre attention - c'est le double destin charnel et surnaturel de l'homme et de la France engagés dans l'histoire. Quels que soient le genre et le registre adoptés, les tribunes ou les modes d'expression de la pensée utilisées, une inspiration fondamentale guide Bernanos : confronter notre vie, nos passions, notre être intérieur, notre pays, notre univers et notre temps avec son destin surnaturel, avec l'aventure du spirituel. L'homme, pour lui, n'est pas seulement corps ou âme, passions ou ascèse, appétit de bien-être ou soif de sainteté, courage ou lâcheté, mais l'un et l'autre. L'homme qui intéresse Bernanos, qu'il observe, auquel il s'adresse dans son ouvre avec colère, rage, passion et tendresse, n'est pas, si l'on veut reprendre un terme beaucoup employé, « unidimensionnel », mais au contraire « multidimensionnel ».
