"Dans l'esprit d'Emile Zola, Les Rougon-Macquart constituaient un tout, un unique et grand ouvrage composé de vingt romans qui en étaient, en quelque sorte, les chapitres successifs. Par un phénomène d'usure courant, les oeuvres ainsi composées ont tendance à se défaire, à revenir aux éléments constitutifs. Les Rougon-Macquart n'ont pas totalement échappé à cette érosion, dont l'agent le plus efficace a été la publication multiple des romans isolés, L'Assommoir, Nana, La Curée, etc. , romans en quelque sorte autonomes, au détriment des romans de liaison ou d'infrastructure, tels que La Conquête de Plassans ou Son Excellence Eugène Rougon. Paradoxalement, le prodigieux succès de certains des romans a fini par nuire à l'ensemble. Il n'en demeure pas moins que l'ouvrage constitue un tout, que son dessin demeure parfaitement lisible, qu'il ressemble assez à ces monuments romains que le temps a attaqués sans réussir à les défigurer. Venant après des éditions fragmentaires trop nombreuses, nous avons voulu rendre à cette publication la structure conforme aux desseins de l'auteur. Voilà pourquoi aussi, respectant cette unité organique, le travail d'analyse portant sur chacun des romans (que l'on trouvera à la suite du texte, en fin de chaque volume, avant les notes et variantes) a été complété par une étude synthétique, la préface d'ensemble, que le lecteur trouvera en tête du premier volume. Le caractère d'unité des Rougon-Macquart, gigantesque roman du Second Empire, est ainsi volontairement souligné par les présentateurs". Armand Lanoux.
