"Paul Eluard (1895-1952) est avant tout le poète de ce qu'André Breton appelle "les vastes, les singuliers, les brusques, les profonds, les splendides, les déchirants mouvements du coeur". Dans les années 1940, sous une forme d'abord hermétique puis de plus en plus transparente, s'affirme une veine autre, poésie de la Résistance et de la plus large communauté humaine, qui n'annule cependant jamais l'incantation amoureuse. Tout ce parcours est jalonné de textes en prose où s'affirment au fil des années des préoccupations "ininterrompues" sur la nature de la poésie comme sur ses modes à travers réflexions et citations sur l'art en général et surtout sur l'apport des peintres qu'il aime et qui savent si bien "donner à voir"".
