Taking its starting point from individual protagonists, places, and themes of debates, this volume addresses the foundational question of the relationship between logos and topos, between human words and spaces, or more abstractly between intellectual utterances and their connection to the physicality of space, between verbal articulation and historical as well as material spatiality. The different data sets and analyses provide a methodologically well-grounded, useful, and sustainable basis for discerning the presence and effectiveness of shared characteristics across various borderlines of politics, religion, time, genre, and knowledge spheres. This, in turn, allows readers access to the interaction and mutual influence of words and spaces, of logos and topos, in Palestine from the fourth to the ninth century CE. The book addresses readers from among the general public as well as students and scholars who are interested in history, church history, archaeology, religious studies, Jerusalem, Israel & Palestine, the Caucasus, Early Christianity, Late Antiquity, Byzantine Studies, questions of theology and religion, literature, women´s history, connections between Christian ideas and the Qur’ān, and Christian-Muslim relations in the medieval world. The Eastern Mediterranean Texts and Contexts series takes readers on critical journeys through Eastern Mediterranean time and space. Its cutting-edge research illuminates foundational aspects of this formative region of the modern world. Leading and emerging scholars of the history, religion, archaeology, and culture of the Middle East (Erga Shneurson, Hartmut Leppin, Konstantin Klein, Nestor Kavvadas, Florian Jordan, Cornelia Horn, Alexander Fantalkin, and Balbina Bäbler) contribute their research to this book. The seeds for our authors´ articles were first planted and began to sprout through an invitation to an international scientific conference. At the Leucorea Institute of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg in 2018, the collegial, but intensive and critical discussions prompted much rewriting so that the insights that were gained over time can now come to full bloom in the present volume. This book is intended to sow new seeds for reflection and productive further research among its readers. This addition includes 31 images, mostly in color.
