Description

Medieval devotees were deeply, emotionally attached to their saints. Reading medieval saints’ lives and miracles through fan studies shows that they were an important outlet by which the devoted expressed their illicit needs for intimacy and connection. In “hurt/comfort” fanfiction, fans write a character into a situation in which they are hurt, so another character can comfort them. In medieval devotional literature, saints and seekers endure physical violence, crushing loneliness, and even death in order to get closer to God. Putting medieval French hagiography and modern fanfiction into dialogue, this book shows that saints and miracles enabled devotees to express their deep devotion to the Christian canon and envision the reciprocation of that love. The book studies a travelling collection, the stories of Saints Katherine, Juliane, and Marguerite, and of an ordinary entertainer, the Tumbler of Our Lady, providing an innovative reading of saints’ lives and miracles in the devotional canon, and as an expression of humanity’s love of stories. In the process, the fierce devotion of fans—medieval, modern, and academic—comes into focus.
