This book examines the myriad ways the idea of Mary Magdalene was represented and utilized over the course of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries in England. These multiple expressions of the Magdalene—as a lay exemplar, a convenient symbol of possible political connections with Burgundy, and a signifi-cant religious figure increasingly unbound from her biblical representation—depicted an approachable female saint who was much closer to the concerns of the average person than the reified, unattainable Virgin Mary. Bound by popular concepts surrounding scripture rather than the book itself, this version of Mary Magdalene mixed the sacred with the bawdy, the spiritual with the political, and English identity with a more expansive notion of the saint and her power than existed on the continent. This representation of the saint could not survive the Reformation intact, but traces of it remain today.
