How can we fully understand the men and women of the Middle Ages? We need to analyze past societies not from our own ideas but from the values shared by the men and women of that era. In this sense, we understand medieval human beings striving first and foremost to achieve an identity, which was both individual and collective because each one shared different circles of identity and solidarity. This individual and collective identity was based on a common memory, drawing on the past but looking towards the future. And both identity and memory were supported by a set of values shared by all members of society, as a common ideology. Identity, memory, and ideology are the vectors that we present in this volume to help us better penetrate our understanding of medieval society. This synthesis draws on three broad, multi-authored volumes published in 2019 to 2021.
