This new book illustrates the interdisciplinary advantages of putting into conversation information from primary medieval records and scientific "proxy data"—the record of climate change preserved in nature. This approach allows a new perspective on the premodern past, one focused on environmental history. It also extends manorial historiography by providing a new focus on environmental history and interdisciplinary research. The book is divided broadly into two sections: the first, synthetic and historiographical; the second, methodological and focused on primary sources. It demonstrates how we know that the late medieval climate was changing significantly—for the worse, from a human perspective—and how we can begin to understand how it affected individuals and communities and how they conceptualized and reacted (or not) to such fundamental environmental changes. Through the varied topics of cultivated landscapes, woodlands, and bodies of water, it illuminates the access that manorial records can provide to the relationship between communities and their environment.
