Description

Product Description This collection examines the ongoing shared struggles of diverse groups of women in Canada and beyond focusing on a diverse range of themes including movements, spaces and rights; inclusion, equity and policies; reproductive labour, work and economy; health, culture and violence; and sports and bodies. Situating Canada as a western society with avowed egalitarian ideals, and based on a shared but different approach, this book highlights the intersectional dimensions of gendered lives and feminist actions for change in both western and non-western contexts. <div> </div> <div>Gender issues and feminist struggles are interconnected internationally and this book examines the Canadian case alongside other countries across Latin America, Africa, Asia, Australasia and Europe to explore the global currents of gender and feminism and its practice. The centrality of gender and the need for feminist praxis remain highly relevant in the 21st Century, whether in western or non-western societies, and this collection provides a comprehensive overview of the international currents for gender equality, empowerment and social justice. </div> Review International contributors in a variety of disciplines, including kinesiology, anthropology, sociology, psychology, gender studies, and criminology, reflect on gender and feminism in Canada and in other parts of the world. Chapters are in sections on negotiations for equality in contested spaces, policies on inclusion and equity, reproductive labor and economy, health and violence, and sports and bodies. A global synthesis is presented for each of the five themes, looking at general trends and prospects for change. Some specific subjects addressed include feminist perspectives among religious women in Canada, citizenship and gender in Nepal, and gender inequality in Swedish legislation of Sami reindeer herding. Other subjects are Filipino migrant hotel workers in rural Manitoba, women mineworkers in South Africa, and contraceptive side effects and Kassena women in Northern Ghana. -- Annotation ©2018 ― (protoview.com) About the Author Glenda Tibe Bonifacio is Associate Professor in Women and Gender Studies at the University of Lethbridge, Canada, where she is also a research affiliate of the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy.
