Under the western European "feudal" mode, owing allegiance to more than one lord simultaneously was long regarded as a sign of decline in the structure of lordship. This study analyses the minor lords of Leicestershire, Derbyshire, and Staffordshire during the long twelfth century to show how such flexible lordship structures were at least as common as single lordship, and allowed minor lords to construct localised centres of authority and become important actors in their own right.
