Description

The early chapters define the hydro-and aerostatics with their allied topics of manometry and atmospheric stability respectively. 'Air in motion' forms the theme of Chapter 3, where it is presented to relate the fundamental laws of aerodynamics in a concise sequence, unhindered by the detailed exposition of potential flow theory, which is considered separately in Chapter 9 and 10. In Chapter 4, definitions of wing and aero-foil geometry are introduced in readiness for the discussion, in Chapter 5, of the forces and pressure systems which are the core of applied aerodynamics. The Chapter on propulsion permits a reappraisal before progressing to aircraft performance in Chapter 7 and 8. These chapters treat the behavior of aircraft as stable machines expressing certain aerodynamic and other force systems. The aero-foil theories (first introduced in Chapter 5) are treated in full in Chapter 11 and 12, and the last Chapter, though using basic ideas developed in the preceding Chapters, stands by itself as a treatment of the static stability of aircrafts in longitudinal, lateral and directional modes.Although experimental data have been quoted, no attempt has been made to describe techniques or apparatus, as Experimental Aerodynamics demands a separate treatment. It is the author's intension to present the material in the simplest and most popular manner and at the same time preserve a strictly scientific approach to the treated problems. Much attention is given to the physical interpretation of the phenomena considered and their application in engineering.
