Cancer care has evolved significantly in the past few decades with the emergence of varied treatment modalities. The modern standard of cancer cure is a combination of multi-modal therapies and surgery. The field of surgical oncology is concerned with the surgical management of tumors, particularly cancerous tumors. Each surgical procedure targets cancer at a particular site only, such as Whipple procedure or pancreaticoduodenectomy that targets pancreatic cancer, or gastrectomy with extended (D2) lymphadenectomy which targets gastric cancer. There have been significant advances in surgical oncology such as minimally invasive surgical techniques, robotic surgery, reconstructive surgery, intraoperative chemotherapy and radiation therapy, among others.
