Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine. Its area of focus is the functioning of the digestive system and its disorders. Hepatology and proctology are two important sub-fields of gastroenterology. Hepatology is a branch concerned with diseases related to the liver, bile ducts, gallbladder and pancreas, whereas, proctology is a branch that studies the disorders related to the rectum, colon and anus. Doctors who specialize in the field of gastroenterology are known as gastroenterologists. Some of the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures they perform include endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and colonoscopy.
