The book begins with a brief history of lightweight materials development during the 20th century, and moves into the basic metallurgy, properties of the available alloys, processing, and applications of each of the lightweight materials. The book's final chapter covers methodologies used in the general materials selection process, specific guidelines for each of the lightweight materials, and the importance of the automotive sector to the lightweight materials industries. This book is intended primarily for technical personnel who want to learn more about lightweight materials. It would be useful to designers, structural engineers, material and process engineers, manufacturing engineers, production personnel, faculty, and students. The book's unique feature is that it provides a single-source reference that covers all of the major types of lightweight materials. About the Author Mr. Campbell retired from Boeing after a 38 year career in the development and manufacturing of materials for aerospace. His research included development of manufacturing processes for metal matrix and polymer matrix composites for the F-15, F/A-18, AV-8B, and C-17 aircraft. Most recently, he was Boeing Senior Technical Fellow for Manufacturing Technology at Phantom Works, the research and development organisation of Boeing. Mr. Campbell holds BS and MS degrees in Metallurgical Engineering and an MBA. In 2005 he was awarded a professional honorary degree by the University of Missouri at Rolla. Mr. Campbell has written two books on manufacturing processes and technology for aerospace published by Elsevier Advanced Technology.
