Description

Suicide is a leading cause of death globally and the second biggest cause of death in young people. Over 800,000 people commit suicide annually. While many approaches to suicide prevention have been proposed, the only ones to show even limited success are those at the grassroots level; involving everyone, from parents to teachers, health care providers and the community as a whole. This book explores both current and outdated perceptions of suicide and presents a number of novel approaches and tools to prevent suicide. About the Author Said Shahtahmasebi, PhD, is currently Director of the Good Life Research Centre Trust, Christchurch, New Zealand. He is a research methodologist and applied statistician. His areas of interest and expertise are related to modelling human behaviour, particularly the longitudinal modelling of health related behaviour. His work experience covers a number of fields including public health, mental health, informatics, nursing, operational research, food and nutrition, sociology and gerontology, and he has been researching suicide prevention for over two decades. He has published over 160 articles, conference papers and reports, and has served as a reviewer and as an editorial board member for a number of scientific journals. He is currently a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the International Journal of Human Rights in Healthcare. Dr Hatim A. Omar is Professor of Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Kentucky, having previously served as Chief of the Division of Adolescent Medicine at the university. He completed his medical training at the Medical Academy, Sofia, Bulgaria, and received postgraduate training in Adolescent Medicine at West Virginia University and Physiology at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York. He is the Founder and Chairman of the Stop Youth Suicide Campaign, and an executive committee member of the International Society of Holistic Health. He has published extensively in all areas of care for adolescents in various peer-reviewed scientific journals, and has served as an ambassador for the wellbeing of adolescents worldwide.
