Product Description This text is intended to assist Chemical Health and Safety Professionals in preparing for their profession and for the appropriate Certification examinations to validate their training and expertise in the many different areas required to protect workers dealing with hazardous materials in the laboratory, semiworks or chemical production industries and in a research or university setting. This is also intended to be a useful reference to all of the areas that the Chemical Health and Safety Professional needs to protect the employees who rely on them to maintain a safe working environment. The topics covered include everything from chemical, biological and radiological hazards to the many different Federal, State and International Regulations that require specific actions wherever hazardous materials are present. This text covers everything from Risk Assessment to Personal Protective Equipment to Audits to the required documentation that the Chemical Health and Safety Professional is required to maintain. About the Author Dr. Wayne Appleton is a chemist and environmental scientist who has more than thirty years of experience as a Hazardous Materials Technician and Emergency Responder. He is the co-author of seven books and more than 20 emergency response training programs that have been used to train over 85,000 people worldwide including industrial emergency responders, Fire Service and Emergency Medical Services personnel, law enforcement agencies, military and intelligence agencies, Prior to his retirement he was a Team Leader for DuPont’s national Emergency Response Team. Melissa Charlton-Smith is an NRCC-certified Chemical Hygiene Officer who taught at the college level for over 20 years. She has degrees in both Chemistry and Biology. She was the Director of the Chemical Hygiene and Safety Program at West Virginia Wesleyan College and was responsible for developing this text to train Chemical Health and Safety Professionals. She is currently the Laboratory Safety Officer and Chemical Hygiene Officer at a private laboratory in West Virginia. Mr. Phifer is Executive Director of the National Registry of Certified Chemists (NRCC). The NRCC is the only professional Board with a certification program designed for Chemical Hygiene Officers. Mr. Phifer has held a variety of American Chemical Society positions, including Chair of the Society’s Committee on Chemical Safety. Mr. Phifer has chaired numerous symposia at national and regional meetings and authored or co-authored a number of publications on laboratory safety and waste management. He was named an ACS Fellow in 2010. Melanie Sal PhD is originally from Morgantown, WV where she attended West Virginia University and completed a BA in Biology and BA in Chemistry. She remained in Morgantown to attend WVU School of Medicine and earn a Ph.D. from the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cell Biology. Dr. Sal is currently an Associate Professor at West Virginia Wesleyan College teaching Microbiology, Immunology, and Physiology while also conducting research with Borrelia burgdorferi.
