Description

Product Description School Sucks! is designed to complement the dominant discourse of school reform by presenting a compendium of critical pedagogical writings that analyze the current issues in urban education and demonstrate alternative praxis for failing schools. The two editors of this volume also serve as the series editors for Peter Lang Publishing's Educational Psychology and Black Studies and Critical Thinking series, giving them remarkable resources from which to draw this selection of writings that represent the very best concepts of pedagogy and praxis. School Sucks! furthers the reader's knowledge of the pretext of urban educational problems and promotes a positive praxis of urban educational reform. Inspired by mentors Mary McLeod Bethune and Paulo Freire, School Sucks! employs a critical pedagogy and praxis in calling for wholesale changes within our urban schools. Review «Rochelle Brock and Greg S. Goodman have done it again: addressing the most pressing issues facing us in education! School Sucks! is a must-read for all who care about changing education for the better!» (Karen T. Carey, CSU Channel Islands) «Never ones to acquiesce to the educational establishment, Drs. Brock and Goodman offer a thoughtful and poignant critique in their raw and authentic style as educators of the people! School Sucks! will inspire you to reconsider commonly held assumptions and to consider new alternatives for changing our schools!» (David Weber, Fresno Pacific University) About the Author Rochelle Brock is Associate Professor of Urban Education and Executive Director of the Urban Teacher Education Program at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana. She is also an editor for The International Journal of Critical Pedagogy and series editor of Black Studies and Critical Thinking (Peter Lang Publishing). She has written books and articles on White privilege, teacher identity, critical pedagogy, African American popular culture, and Black feminist theory. Greg S. Goodman is Associate Professor of Education at Clarion University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include school psychology, educational psychology, distance learning, and how people learn.
