Description

Product Description The book assesses the EU performance in the broader UN setting after the Lisbon Treaty. Distinguished scholars with expertise in EU-UN relations use a comprehensive analytical framework of performance to examine various aspects of the complex EU engagement in UN politics. Performance goes beyond the achievement of agreed-upon objectives and engulfs the underlying, intra-organizational, agreement-reaching processes. The contributors examine the output of the intra-EU policy-making process and its impact within the UN setting. They cover thematic areas of special importance for the EU such as environment, human rights, disarmament and peacekeeping operations as well as special UN bodies and forums where the EU is particularly active, such as the UN General Assembly and its main Committees, the International Labour Organisation, UNESCO and the Non-Proliferation Review Conferences. Review “This book is a great achievement by a strong team of experts on EU-UN relations. The editors provide most useful analytical guidelines that significantly extend the research agenda of EU performance studies. The contributors demonstrate in a dozen case studies a considerable degree of variation in EU performance and examine factors causing this variation.” (Professor Knud Erik Jørgensen, Aarhus University, Denmark) “This esteemed group of experts on EU-UN relations introduce a rigorous and sophisticated analytical framework to assess the performance of the EU in a variety of UN settings, from the UN General Assembly to specialized agencies and negotiations. Their findings offer a new standard in assessing performance by critically examining the EU's output, outcome, and impact in broader multilateral processes. This volume is an essential contribution to understanding the EU's evolving multilateral engagement in a dynamic global context.” (Professor Katie Verlin Laatikainen, Adelphi University, USA) From the Back Cover The book assesses the EU performance in the broader UN setting after the Lisbon Treaty.
