This book examines the complex and multidimensional relationship between culture and social media, and its specific impact on issues of identity and social movements, in a globalized world. Contemporary cyber culture involves communication among people who are culturally, nationally, and linguistically similar or radically different. Social media becomes a space for mediated cultural information transfer which can either facilitate a vibrant public sphere or create cultural and social cleavages. Contributors of the book come from diverse cultural backgrounds to provide a comprehensive analysis of how these social media exchanges allow members of traditionally oppressed groups find their voices, cultivate communities, and construct their cultural identities in multiple ways. About the Author Margaret U. D'Silva is a Professor of Communication and Director of the Institute for Intercultural Communication at the University of Louisville. She is President (2019-2021) of the International Association for Intercultural Communication Studies. Widely published, she recently co-edited, with Ahmet Atay, Mediated Intercultural Communication in a Digital Age (2019, Routledge). Ahmet Atay is an Associate Professor at The College of Wooster. He is the author of Globalization’s Impact on Identity Formation: Queer Diasporic Males in Cyberspace (2015, Lexington Books) and co-editor of 9 books. He recently co-edited Millennials and Media Ecology: Culture, Pedagogy, and Politics (2019, Routledge), Mediated Intercultural Communication in a Digital Age (2019, Routledge), and Examining Millenials Reshaping Organizational Cultures: From Theory to Practice (2018, Lexington Books).
